October 2008 - "Breast Cancer Awareness Month"

As all of you know, this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a time when we are encouraged to be proactive in our self-care as well as provide support for those whom we know are dealing with this terrible disease. I’m sure that each one of us has seen and/or experienced the effects of breast cancer. If you are a survivor, I applaud your mental and emotional toughness. You all show much courage as you continue to live your lives daily despite the sickness, pain and uncertainty. You are heroes in every sense: taking care of children, going to work, and reaching out to each other with love and support. I see many of you who daily put on a smile because you know that each day is a gift and you treat it as such.

Having the opportunity to be proactive in our own health care is also a gift that too many women don’t utilize. What does being proactive mean? Being part of a "team" with your physician and other treatment providers. Over the past twenty years many women have "found" their voices and are willing to speak up about child care, equal pay, credit ratings, and using their vote, for some reason, we clam up when the topic is how we take care of ourselves. Modesty aside, when working with your physician, you must be able to ask questions and bring up any concerns you have. I am aware that often your appointments may be only 10-15 minutes after you have waited for a half-hour, but it is important that you be prepared.

1. Make a list. Start in the month before your appointment. Note any changes or unusual outbreaks.

2.Write down all your prescription medications as well as what you get over-the-counter. Make sure your doctor is aware of everything you use.

3. If you have reached a certain age, ask if specific tests need to be scheduled (ie: colonoscopy at age 50).

Most important, if you do not feel comfortable discussing delicate issues with your physician, find a new one! Open and clear communication is vital for this relationship to benefit you.

If you have not yet had your mammogram for this year, get it scheduled. If you are lacking health care coverage right now, Purple and Pink is sponsoring free or low cost mammograms on Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 9am -3pm. Call 546-1111 to register.

Remember, it’s better to be proactive than reactive!

Blessings to you,
